Greener Ethiopia is a local, non-profit, non-political organization with the mission to promote convergence among Ethiopians everywhere towards rehabilitation and conservation of the natural and social habitats of Ethiopia.

As the degradation of the Ethiopian environment is a serious case demanding attention of all actors of Ethiopian society, GE has embarked on an action programme to restore trees to Ethiopia’s most degraded lands. GE advocates self-reliance and environmentally sustainable economic development. For that to be achieved GE works closely with targeted communities, community based organizations, women’s associations and relevant local and national government departments.

Greener Ethiopia was founded on September 21st, 2002. GE has been registered with the Ministry of Justice and signed the operational agreement with the Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission.

Poor land-management that has permitted deforestation has resulted in decreased agricultural production and famine, affecting us all. As GE has grown, we have been joined by Ethiopians of diverse ethnic groups, religions, and professions-all who share a concern for our future.

Our core approach begins with reforestation in order to stabilize and regenerate Ethiopia's vanishing resources. A healthier environment then enables us to introduce offshoot projects, such as income-generating schemes, the introduction of new, appropriate technologies, and capacity-building for those less-empowered people, namely women and children.
